T​raffic and Transport year end statistics from NHC

Highlights:

  1. 📊Traffic levels: Overall traffic levels dropped by 1.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year and remains below pre-pandemic levels.
  2. 🚚Goods vehicles: Van traffic decreased by 3.8%, while lorry traffic increased by 2.6% in 2024.
  3. ⏱️Travel characteristics: Tuesdays were the busiest in the morning, Wednesdays in the evening, and Fridays had the highest overall traffic.
  4. 🚴Cycling: 2.3% of journeys were made by cycling in 2025, either for the whole trip or as part of it, slightly up from 2.2% in 2022.
  5. 🚶Walking: For short trips under a mile, walking was the most common choice at 76.8% in 2025, slightly up from 76.0% in 2022.
  6. 🚗Travel by car: The main mode share for car use as driver or passenger was 60.0% in 2025, down from 61.4% in 2022.
  7. 🗣️Residents’ opinion: People favoured “Improved public transport” (70%), “Cheaper public transport” (64%), and “Better walking infrastructure” (57%) as top measures to reduce car use.
  8. 🚌Bus journeys: Bus passenger journeys rose by 11% in 2023/24 from the previous year, but are still below pre-pandemic levels.
  9. 🚆Rail travel: Rail passenger journeys increased by 12% in 2023/24 from the previous year, but are still below pre-pandemic levels.
  10. EV adoption: 8.5% of households owned a fully electric vehicle in 2025, up from 3.3% in 2022.
