Ashwell United Reformed Church continues to hold weekly Sunday morning services led by our wonderful and reliable network of local lay preachers. The church is one of eight URCs included in the North Herts Group of URCs, part of Thames North Synod.
Since January 2018 the group has been led by two Ministers who have direct oversight of the URC churches at Letchworth, Hitchin and Stevenage but with some pastoral and worship responsibility for the smaller churches in the group, including Ashwell.
One of the important principles of the reformed tradition is that each church community manages its own affairs, making its own decisions, guided by the Church Elders who are similar to trustees of other organisations. In this way, we are very closely responsible for the care and maintenance of our church buildings, although they are owned by Thames North Synod. Earlier in 2018 work began on repairs to the church ceiling and redecoration of the interior. We could not have done this without the support of many village clubs and grant funding from both the URC and from the Beds and Herts Historic Churches Trust. Our wider village appeal has also raised several thousand pounds and we are so grateful to many families who have helped us in this way.
We hope our fund-raising during 2018 will be enough to undertake other improvements that will not only refurbish the church but make it more comfortable and welcoming for the whole community of Ashwell. One of the ways in which community groups helped us in 2017 was with our Saturday Teas held during July, August and part of September. Individual groups using our hall took turns to not only provide delicious scones and cakes but to manage the entire proceedings on their Saturday afternoons. These were very much enjoyed and appreciated. We hope to do the same later this year.
Each of our local preachers has a different way of delivering the teaching of Jesus Christ and helping us to understand the Christian message, so each week there is something to look forward to as well as the opportunity to take time out from the stresses and strains, to sit and listen to a bit of history, some philosophy maybe, not infrequently some humour and always some spiritual nourishment.
Our Christian Mission is as follows:
We are here to worship God and to show his love by
Actively caring for God’s creation
Seeking God’s guidance in all that we do
Helping others in our community to find the peace of God
Welcoming all to our church with love and friendship
Ensuring that we support justice for all people
Learning and teaching about God’s love
Living our lives as Jesus taught us
day by day, with the love of Jesus Christ
and with the help and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
If you would like to find out more, come along and join us one Sunday morning at 10:45am or contact any one of the Elders below. We look forward to seeing you one day soon.
